Curriculum Issues and Concerns
Curriculum managers and educational experts are constantly seeking for new ways to improve learning through teaching.
Curriculum innovations, on the other hand, appeared to be problematic for many, difficulties that must be addressed.
Certain issues must be addressed in order
to overcome the attitudes and feelings that cause some concern.
• Learners' poor academic achievement.
Issues with varying curriculum implementation
among schools and teachers appear to be one of the reasons for the country's
overall low school performance. Books and other teaching resources are
frequently criticized. Overcrowded classrooms are not conducive to learning.
• Stakeholders lack a sense of ownership in
curriculum innovations.
Sometimes the implementers may not fully
comprehend the changes or modifications that they are making. Because the
purpose is ambiguous, there are many questions in the implementation as well as
evaluation from involved parties. Other stakeholders' support is limited as a
result of these issues. They simply leave the school to do it on their own,
putting the responsibility on the classroom teacher.
• Some curricular innovations are the
consequence of a bandwagon effect, but they are not well supported by managers.
In order for some schools to be a part of the
global educational scene, significant modifications and innovations are
implemented, even if the school is not ready. They only need to demonstrate
that they are keeping up with developments, even if their equipment is
inadequate.
• A lack of consistent monitoring and
evaluation.
After installing a new curriculum, it is left
unattended. There are few tools available to determine whether or not the
implementation is going smoothly. When the implementation period is through,
there may be no evaluation aspects, therefore the innovation cannot be regarded
as a failure or success in order to be continued or not.
• Innovations cause teacher burnout.
With so many new modifications to the
curriculum, many teachers are becoming exhausted. They become exhausted quickly
and lose motivation as a result of the rapid shifts that occur.
• Not everyone is aware of new developments.
Only the managers or supporters are aware of
the changes. Those personally involved just follow the hook line & sinker.
This is known as regimentation.
